Every summer, football splits into two games. One is played on grass. The other is played in airport lounges, on encrypted phones, and in the replies of journalists with padlock emojis in their names. The transfer window is the sport's second season, and it is frequently more dramatic than the first.

What is a transfer window?
A transfer window is the period when clubs are allowed to register new players. FIFA requires each association to set two windows a year: a longer one in the off-season, the summer window in Europe, and a shorter mid-season one in winter. Outside those dates a club can agree whatever it likes, but it cannot register the player to actually play.
That word, register, is the whole machine. Players are not bought like cars. What moves between clubs is the registration, the legal right to field the player. The fee is compensation for surrendering it early, because the player is still under contract.
Why do clubs pay fees at all?
Because contracts have value. A player signed until 2029 does not have to be sold to anyone. If a richer club wants him now, it must make walking away worth it. That is why contract length drives price: the longer the deal, the stronger the selling club's hand.
Flip it round and you get the free transfer. Run your contract down to zero and you can leave for nothing, which is why clubs get twitchy when a key player enters the final year. Sell for something now, or risk losing him for nothing later. Some of the sharpest business every summer is done on frees, where the fee is zero but wages and signing bonuses balloon instead.
What actually happens in a transfer, step by step?
The sequence is more standardized than the chaos suggests:
- Interest and permission. The buying club approaches the selling club for permission to talk to the player. Approaching the player first is called tapping up and is against the rules, which is roughly as effective as a speed limit on the autobahn.
- Fee agreed between clubs. Often structured: a fixed sum, add-ons tied to appearances or trophies, sometimes a sell-on percentage.
- Personal terms. Wages, length, bonuses, image rights. Usually the quick part, because the player's camp has typically been aware for weeks.
- The medical. A day of scans and fitness tests. Deals do occasionally die here, which is why nobody announces before it.
- Registration and the announcement video. The paperwork lands at the league and the club posts a clip of the player holding a shirt and saying the badge is massive.
Why does everything happen on deadline day?
Because a deadline is leverage. Selling clubs hold out for a better fee, buying clubs hold out for a panic discount, and both sides discover their true price at 10pm on the final day. Add the domino effect, where one big sale gives a club money it must immediately spend, and you get the annual last-48-hours frenzy that television has learned to monetize with countdown clocks.
